Barges race through canals surrounded by flower gardens

For many tourists who travel across Mexico, taking traditional barges to visit the canals near Mexico City is a lot of fun. The locals, however, have decided to bring the fun to the next level! The locals who operate the touristy, non-motorized barges took part in a friendly competition on Friday. The operators were supposed to race through the canals which are surrounded by islands covered with farms and flower gardens. The barges were colorfully decorated with flowers. According to the locals, this event is meant to bring joy to everyone, and to pay tribute to a pre-Hispanic tradition, in which people offered flowers to their God. This parade is part of the week-long celebration taking place near Mexico City.
