Unwanted and Unnoticed. The title of a disturbing new report on asylum and immigration-related deaths in Europe.
It documents 160 victims from 50 countries over the last 5 years.
Many of their names are unknown, their stories untold.
But the report says together, they reveal the extent that Europe has departed from the humanitarian ideals it promotes.
The report say that these deaths in the detention centres, the streets and the squats of Europe, reflect the lack of regard governments have for migrants and asylum seekers and it says the The figures are in reality only the tip of the iceberg.
There is a climate of anti-immigrant sentiment here in Europe. Fuelled by the recession, and the reemergence of the far right, and critics say it has trickled down in to mainstream politics.
The tragic truth is that for many that motivation is destroyed bringing their abruptly to an end. This report concludes, in Europe, Some lives simply don’t matter.
