Wisconsin state trooper shot dead: Police

A Wisconsin State Patrol trooper and a suspect were fatally shot and killed Tuesday in Fond du Lac.

A Wisconsin state trooper was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with a person who appeared to be a bank robber, authorities said.

The suspect matched the descriptions of the same person who robbed a bank in the Marinette County village of Wausaukee earlier on Tuesday.

No details were available about the trooper or the suspect.

Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve said the suspect and his vehicle were located in Fond du Lac, where the shooting incident happened.

The patrol trooper was following the suspect's vehicle about 5:30 p.m. when they exchanged fire, Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb said at a news conference late Tuesday.

"Both the trooper and the suspect were killed in the exchange of gunfire," Lamb said.

The state Department of Justice said its Division of Criminal Investigation was looking into several crimes committed on Tuesday in Marinette County and in Fond du Lac, including the death of the state trooper.

"We cannot confirm at this time definitively how these crimes fit together but investigators are working to provide an accurate timeline of events," the department said in a statement.

Dozens of bystanders crowded the place where the fatal shooting took place.

Mark Stevens said violence is becoming almost a daily occurrence in his neighborhood.

"It seems like every day it's all you see on the news," Stevens was quoted by USA Today as saying. "Either Milwaukee or Madison, all these shootings with the police officers recently. But now here in Fond du Lac it's kind of surreal."
