million more Britons Rely on Housing Benefit

It’s a housing crisis. The UK government has come under pressure after new analysis revealed Britain’s housing benefits bill has soared. More people are relying on state handouts with the cost of housing benefit alone set to hit an estimated £25 billion by 2017. Campaigners gathered in central London demanding change.

Since the coalition government came to power in 2010 the number of people now claiming housing benefits to help pay their rent has dramatically increased by half a million. The lack of affordable housing in the UK has led to more Britons renting allowing private landlords to charge significantly higher rents.

The home for Britain campaign is centered around creating social rented housing to ease the pressure on the private rented sector. The UK think tank Policy exchange admitted more social housing would save the government £3 billion a year and those campaigning felt those in power were not taking the issue seriously.

With 1.8 million Britons waiting for social housing, it’s clear unless urgent action is taken a crisis could become a catastrophe.
