Press TV has conducted an interview with Jack Rasmus, a professor of political economy in San Francisco, and Brent Budowsky, a columnist at The Hill from Washington, DC, about the growing poverty rate within the European Union.

Budowsky believes that the current austerity measures in Europe, such as raising the retirement age, have led to the outrage of the people.

The European governments, he says, should urgently put their conservative economic policies aside and invest their money directly in creating job opportunities for the average people. Budowsky says this policy would ultimately invigorate the economy through what is called “demand side economics.”

Rasmus, for his part, says the high rate of poverty and unemployment within the European Union well indicates that the ongoing austerity and monetary policies have failed to bear any fruit. He asserts that the main problem with the EU is that it lacks a comprehensive and integrated fiscal system.
