New documents obtained by a British newspaper show the UK government was guilty of ignoring allegations of child sexual abuse.

Cabinet office documents show the former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher was made aware of child abuse allegations involving Cyril Smith, before he was knighted in 1988. Thatcher was warned the award could risk the integrity of the honours system.

Smith was investigated on more than one occasion on suspicion of indecent assault against teenage boys in the 1960’s. The documents which consist of 19 pages have made some critics question the attitude the government had during the Thatcher administration. They are concerned at the way the government’s reputation held more value than safe guarding children.
Cyril Smith died aged 82 in 2010 with his knighthood intact.
