California Sen. Dianne Feinstein has urged Hillary Clinton to explain in more detail why she used a personal e-mail account to conduct government business during her time as secretary of state.
"What I would like is for her to come forward and say just what the situation is, because she is the preeminent political figure right now," Feinstein told NBC.
Clinton is considered the front-runner for the party's 2016 presidential nomination.
The "situation isn't clear," Feinstein said adding that "She is the leading candidate, whether it be Republican or Democrat, for the next president...from this point on, the silence is going to hurt her."
Clinton’s use of a personal email account for official government business when she was Secretary of State came to light after it scooped the news last week.
A special House committee investigating the 2012 deadly attack on a US diplomatic compound in the Libyan city of Benghazi has issued subpoenas for information on her e-mails.
Hillary Clinton did not have a government email address during her four-year tenure at the State Department. Republicans are accusing her of being overly secretive.
