Masked gunmen have reportedly shot and killed Victoriano Santos Hilario, the deputy mining minister of the Dominican Republic, and injured his son.
Police authorities said on Saturday that the deadly shooting occurred late Friday when the armed men broke into the home of Santos Hilaria in Cotui, the capital of Sanchez Ramirez Province.
The suspects, who were described by the official’s wife, Zoila Maria Gutierrez, as “three hooded men,” fled the scene of the crime in a gray vehicle after carrying out the murder.
Following the home invasion, the 49-year-old received treatment for gunshot wounds outside his house but succumbed to his injuries, while his 20-year-old son Victor Manuel Santos Gutierrez, who was shot in the side, was taken to a hospital.
Police have launched an investigation into the crime, the motive of which is still unclear.
Santos Hilario’s Dominican Liberation Party, or PLD, meanwhile, has called on the authorities to impose “the kind of punishment that the perpetrators of this horrendous act deserve.”
PLD data indicated that the assailants on Friday night had forced the official’s son to open the door of his home at gunpoint after intercepting him.
The men are said to have taken the deputy minister from his bedroom into a hallway where they shot him.
A member of the central committee of the PLD, Santos Hilario was a candidate for mayor of Cotui.
