Nissan adds 640,000 sedans to hood switch recall

The Nissan group is recalling some 640,000 vehicles due to a problem with the hood, which can open while the car is moving, the US traffic safety agency says.

The giant Japanese automaker detected a fault in the secondary hood latch of its Altima model manufactured between March 2013 and December 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Friday.

The mechanism may not be secure even if the hood appears closed, which increases the chances of the hood opening while the vehicle is in motion.

Nissan has not reported accidents related to these faults, but said it is investigating the problem and may recall even more vehicles.

With the addition of the Altima sedans, some 1.1 million Nissan and Infiniti vehicles worldwide are now subject to the recall.

Last October, Nissan recalled 238,000 Altimas from the 2013 model year for the same problem. The automaker also recalled 216,000 Nissan Pathfinders from 2013 and 2014, Infiniti JX35s from 2013 and QX60s from 2014.

Hyundai has announced that it is recalling more than 26,000 Genesis luxury cars from the 2015 model year in the US and Canada over a water leak that can cause the transmission gear shifter to malfunction.

FCA US also said it is recalling nearly 340,000 vehicles, including its large 4x4 Jeep brand (Grand Cherokee) manufactured between September 2010 and August 2013, and the Dodge Durango manufactured between January 2011 and August 2013. The Italian-owned automotive giant says the electrical system of the fuel pump with these vehicles may have problems, causing a sudden stop of the engine.

This is while last year General Motors recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles across the globe due to defective ignition switches. The death toll in the General Motors’ faulty ignition switch case has reached at least 70, according to a Reuters analysis of government fatal-crash data.

The US giant has been fined $35 million by federal regulators in the past, for delays in recalling cars with faulty ignition switches.

The latest incident marks a blow to GM's reputation, whose manufacturing philosophy and quality have been well-established worldwide.
