Reuters Pakistan bureau chief dies in Islamabad

Late Reuters bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Maria Golovnina

The Britain-based international news agency, Reuters, says its bureau chief for Pakistan and Afghanistan has died in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

The news company said in a statement that Maria Golovnina collapsed in her office on Monday. An ambulance took her to Islamabad’s Kulsum International Hospital, “but medical teams were unable to save her.”

“Maria was a superb journalist with a long and varied career at Reuters,” the news agency stated, adding, “Her talents, energy and can-do spirit will be sorely missed.”

Pakistani officials also confirmed Golovnina’s death, and said the body had been transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in the capital. Police said a post-mortem examination would be needed to establish the cause of death.

The 34-year-old Russian national worked in Britain, Singapore, Russia, Afghanistan and Iraq, before she joined Reuters in 2001 and took up her role in Pakistan in 2013.
