Tens of thousands of Catalan residents have been ordered to stay indoors after a chemical explosion.
Spanish authorities on Thursday urged some 65,000 residents of five towns in the northern region of Catalonia to stay indoors for about two hours after a large, orange toxic cloud spread due to a chemical explosion.
The blast occurred in the city of Igualada when the chemical products being delivered to a warehouse became mixed and exploded, a spokeswoman for the region’s firefighting department said. Two people were slightly injured, she added.
The alert was issued for residents in Igualada, located some 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Barcelona, and four nearby towns. Roads in and out of Igualada were cordoned off during the alert.
The order was lifted two hours later, but remained in effect for pregnant women, children, elderly people and those with respiratory problems.
