Stephen Harper’s conservative government is witnessing turmoil marked by recent departures and a cabinet reshuffle enacted by the Canadian prime minister himself.
On Monday, Harper shook up the cabinet to name new foreign and defense ministers.
Robert Nicholson, who has served as defense minister since 2013, was tapped to replace John Baird as foreign minister. Nicholson will be replaced as defense chief by Jason Kenney.
Recently, Baird, one of Harper’s most trusted cabinet ministers, unexpectedly announced he was resigning as foreign minister and leaving politics.
Also on Monday, Eve Adams, a conservative member of parliament, announced she is joining the opposition Liberals and shot parting barbs at Harper.
“I can no longer support mean-spirited leadership that divides people instead of bringing them together,” Adams said, adding, “I want to work with someone who inspires, not with fear-mongers and bullies.”
The Monday appointments also come ahead of a scheduled election in October.
