A car bomb blast at a Libyan army post in the battleground second largest city of Benghazi has killed a father and son, the military says.

Spokesman for the army's special forces, Milud al-Zwei, said 20 other people, mostly soldiers, were also wounded in the blast on Friday.

He added that the blast occurred when the bomber, heading for an army post in the central district of al-Lithi, was intercepted. The bomber then blew up his car short of the target.

Benghazi has been the scene of numerous attacks and political assassinations amidst an increasing power struggle among several militia groups who fought against former dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, during the 2011 uprising. The ouster of Gaddafi gave rise to a patchwork of heavily-armed militias and deep political divisions.

The eastern city has been gripped by a battle between militants and forces loyal to top opposition figure retired General Khalifa Haftar over the past months.

Battles among the rival militants, who had participated in the anti-Gaddafi uprising, are mainly over the control of oil facilities in eastern Libya.
