Fiji to remove ‘outdated’ Union Jack from its flag

Fiji is to remove Union Jack from its flag.

Fiji says it will remove the symbols of British colonialism form its flag and replace them with a design symbolizing the Pacific country.

Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has announced that a national contest would be held to design a new flag.

The new flag of the Commonwealth Pacific nation is expected to be unveiled on 10 October, the 45th anniversary of independence from Britain.

‘Symbols of colonizer’

Fiji’s flag is light blue featuring the Union Jack in the top left corner. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said the symbols of the flag need to be changed as they are outdated and root in the Pacific nation’s colonial past.

“We need to replace the symbols on our existing flag that are out of date and no longer relevant, including some anchored to our colonial past…The new flag should reflect Fiji’s position in the world today as a modern and truly independent nation state,” Frank Bainimarama said on Tuesday.

Four former British colonies including Australia, New Zealand and Tuvalu still retain the Union Jack on their flags.

Back in October New Zealand announced that the it will hold two referendums in 2015 and 2016 to decide whether to change its flag.
