On Tuesday, Jubilation rose to fever pitch in the Turkish border towns of Suruc and Diyabakir that have been hosting nearly the entire civilian population of Kobani, who have taken refuge there since mid-September. The celebrations followed 131 days of deadly conflict that left Kobani in rubles:

A small number of refugees are trickling back to Kobani, but Turkish soldiers on Tuesday fired teargas at refugees and Turkish villagers who were attempting to cross the border at Muritspinar, citing ongoing security concerns. And as eager as Kobani’s residents are to return, other very valid concerns exist that relate to the lack of food, water and electricity, as well as necessary medicines.

The major victory against the ISIL terrorists in Kobani after four-and-a-half months of hard battle is of strategic significance to the Kurds. Their celebrations on the streets of southeastern Turkey is equally significant, where around 200,000 refugees are looking forward to rebuild their homes, now left in ruins.
