An American biochemistry professor has been arrested by police in the Canada’s capital city Ottawa in relation to an alleged chemical threat.
"We apprehended a male at the Chimo hotel without incident," a police spokesperson told AFP on Wednesday.
The hotel had been previously evacuated by police, who had brought in a hazmat team and tactical squads after the suspect’s wife reportedly tipped them that he had loaded his van with dangerous chemicals before traveling to Ottawa from Halifax.
"He is being held on a Canada-wide warrant issued relating to charges in Nova Scotia province,” police added.
According to local media, the suspect has been identified as American national Christopher Phillips, a University professor in Halifax who was formerly a US military biochemical weapons expert.
Police also confirmed that his van had been secured.
Ottawa police Staff Sergeant John McGetrick said it was not clear what the suspect’s intentions with the chemicals were, but added there was "no information received at this point that there was any terrorist intentions."
Meanwhile in Halifax, police roped off sections of the city after "large quantities of chemicals" were found inside a cottage.
“The chemicals are of a nature that we need to employ a chemist to help us identify what type of chemicals that they are," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Greg Church.
