Nina Berman, a professor of Photography at Columbia University in New York City, visited the Zaatari refugree camp in Jordan in coordination with the United Nations. A display of her work has now opened up in the lobby of the UN Secretariat building.

The photographs depicted daily life in the camps where millions of Syrians who've been driven from their homes in the ongoing fighting, now reside.

In addition to documenting life in the camps, the UN photography team decorated the camp's security wall with large sized photographs as decoration. Dutch Foreign Minister Ben Keonders said the exhibit shows the need for more concrete action.

Jordan, whose UN mission sponsored the exhibition, is reported to be providing military training to militants who continue the fighting against the Syrian government. Reports from 2013 and earlier document that the militants have been using the Zaatari camp as a recruiting ground, despite this being officially a violation of UN regulations and Jordanian law. Photographer Nina Berman refused to give any comment on the issue.

Millions of Syrians have fled from their homes and now reside in camps like the one at Zaatari. At these camps, the United Nations Relief Works Agency is able to provide basic services like education, healthcare, food assistance. As the fighting goes on, the number of refugees continues to rise.
