US intensifies security measures amid anticipated post-election unrest

US authorities have installed security fences in Washington D.C. as they brace for potential violent protests following this week’s presidential election.

The Secret Service erected new 2.5-meter metal fences around the White House and Treasury Department complex, as well as Vice-President Kamala Harris’s residence.

Temporary bicycle-rack barriers with signs reading, “Police Line: Do not cross” were also positioned around the US Capitol.

The agency also installed physical security measures outside the West Palm Beach, Florida, convention center where Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is set to hold an election night watch party.

“The Secret Service is working closely with federal, state and local partners in Washington, DC and Palm Beach County, Florida to ensure heightened levels of election day safety and security,” the agency said in a statement on Monday.

“These enhancements are not in response to any specific issue but are part of wide-ranging public safety preparations for [the November 5] election.”

The measures come amid concerns of violence breaking out in the days after the election similar to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters following his refusal to accept the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

The former US president claimed that he won the 2020 presidential election and that there was "massive" voter fraud.

The attack on the Capitol led to several deaths. Trump was indicted for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in both Washington and Georgia.
