An Iranian company has developed a nanotechnology-based diagnostic kit that detects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium associated with chronic stomach inflammation, peptic ulcers and an increased risk of stomach cancer.

According to Iran’s Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology’s Nano and Micro Technologies Development Headquarters, the kit uses lateral flow assay technology to identify H. pylori antigens in stool samples, offering a non-invasive method for detecting the bacterial infection.

The product provides qualitative results, indicating whether the target antigen is detected in a sample.

Its relatively simple testing procedure, rapid results and comparatively low cost could make it a useful diagnostic tool for medical laboratories, hospitals and healthcare centers.

H. pylori is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans and can persist in the stomach for years.

Although many infected individuals experience no noticeable symptoms, persistent infection can cause chronic gastritis and ulcers in the stomach or duodenum.

The bacterium is also recognized as an important risk factor for stomach cancer, although infection does not necessarily lead to cancer.

Early detection of H. pylori can help healthcare providers identify patients who may benefit from treatment and reduce the risk of complications associated with persistent infection.

The Iranian-developed kit is based on lateral flow assay technology, which allows a sample to move across a specialized testing strip and interact with specific antibodies.

If the target antigen is present, a visible reaction appears in a designated area of the test, allowing the result to be interpreted according to the product's instructions.

Stool antigen testing is an established non-invasive method for detecting active H. pylori infection.

Depending on the product's validated performance and the patient's clinical circumstances, it can be used for initial diagnosis and to confirm whether treatment has successfully eradicated the bacterium.

The technology can simplify certain diagnostic procedures and reduce the need for complex laboratory equipment, potentially improving access to testing in different healthcare settings.

The company also manufactures other diagnostic kits based on lateral flow technology.

According to the information released by the Nano and Micro Technologies Development Headquarters, its production processes follow quality management standards and requirements for medical device quality management systems.

The development of domestically produced diagnostic kits represents a step toward expanding access to medical testing technologies in Iran.
