Iran, Pakistan push to finalize agreements, boost cooperation
Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and his Pakistani counterpart Mohsin Naqvi have discussed finalizing agreements already signed by the two countries.
During talks in Tehran on Monday, the two ministers discussed the promotion of bilateral cooperation.
The Pakistani minister invited Momeni to visit Islamabad.
Naqvi arrived in Tehran earlier on Monday and was welcomed by his Iranian counterpart.
The visit is aimed at reviewing relations and discussing the implementation of the previously-signed agreements.
Speaking in a televised interview on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei rejected speculations that the Pakistani minister carries a special initiative or message, explaining that the trip is taking place entirely within the framework of bilateral relations.
“As a party that has played a mediating role, Pakistan would naturally make use of opportunities to raise regional issues. However, so far there has been no indication that Naqvi is carrying any specific message or proposal from the United States,” Baqaei said.
The trip comes amid heightened regional tensions and follows previous mediation efforts by the Pakistani minister between Iran and the United States.
It also comes a day after Iran said it has conveyed its conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz through mediators – that the vital waterway will remain closed until Iran’s demands are met.
Pakistan has invariably called for diplomacy, having previously helped broker a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that later collapsed thanks to Washington’s violations.
