Homemade bomb explodes at Moscow restaurant, leaving 3 dead
A homemade explosive device exploded at an Italian restaurant in Moscow, killing at least three people and injuring 21 others, Russian state media reported, citing security officials.
The blast happened at about 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Saturday at the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square near the city center.
According to Russia’s National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC), the explosion took place when a woman attempted to carry a homemade explosive device into the restaurant, but was stopped at the entrance by a security guard before the explosive device went off.
The woman and the guard were both killed in the blast. One of the restaurant’s patrons was also killed, and 21 others sustained injuries in the attack, varying in severity.
The injured and wounded received medical treatment and were transferred to hospitals, officials said.
The Russian Investigative Committee said investigators and forensic experts are investigating the incident.
The suspected perpetrator has yet to be identified, and a possible motive for the attack has not been determined.
Reports said the restaurant had been booked for a private birthday party and Alexandre Tchaïko, the commander of the Russian Air Force, was present at the event.
Several Russian officials, military officers, and public figures have been targeted by Ukrainian forces since Moscow launched its special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
General Yaroslav Moskalik was assassinated in April 2025.
A bomb attached to a scooter outside a Moscow apartment block killed General Igor Kirillov, head of the Russian army’s chemical weapons division, and his assistant in December 2024.
Zakhar Prilepin, a writer, was seriously wounded in a May 2023 car explosion that killed another person near the city of Nizhny Novgorod.
Military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky was killed at a cafe in Saint Petersburg in April 2023 after a statuette handed to him exploded.
