Iran joins founding states of World AI Cooperation Organization
Iran has officially become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) after signing the founding document in Shanghai, China.
Iran’s Ambassador to Beijing Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli signed the document on behalf of the Iranian government on Friday, formally registering the country among the founding members of the newly established organization.
In a meeting with Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Bin after signing the document, Rahmani Fazli stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation in shaping the future of advanced technologies.
“Iran is ready to actively participate in the scientific, research and practical development of artificial intelligence, as well as in the creation of international mechanisms to ensure the fair use of this technology,” he said.
Iran’s joining the international initiative and becoming a WAICO founding member reflect the country’s constructive approach toward emerging technologies and utilizing AI capacities for sustainable development and societal progress, he added.
Representatives from a total of 29 countries signed the agreement on the establishment of the WAICO in Shanghai on July 16.
The agreement stipulates that the independent, intergovernmental organization will be guided by the purposes of the United Nations Charter, uphold the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and follow a people-centered approach.
The organization aims to promote international cooperation and global governance in artificial intelligence, ensure the sound and orderly development of AI in a beneficial, safe and equitable direction, and bring benefits to all humanity.
Its headquarters will be in Shanghai.
