Two Palestinians killed as residents confront settler raid in occupied West Bank
Two Palestinian men have been killed by Israeli occupation forces in the village of Deir Jarir, east of the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, as residents attempted to repel a raid by illegal Israeli settlers.
The Palestinian health ministry said on Monday that Odeh Abdul Rahim Odeh Farakhna, 53, and Ahmed Adel Rashid Abu Mukho, 26, were killed after being struck with live ammunition fired by Israeli troops during the confrontation.
According to local reports, the violence broke out after illegal settlers entered the village, prompting residents to mobilize in an effort to repel the incursion.
The confrontation escalated as Israeli forces opened live fire, resulting in the deaths of the victims.
The killings came amid a sharp increase in violence by Israeli settlers across the occupied West Bank.
Settler groups have increasingly carried out raids on Palestinian communities in the occupied territory as a means of trying to seize land and intimidate local residents.
Since October 2023, illegal settlers, backed by Israeli forces, have intensified attacks across the occupied West Bank, killing more than 1,200 Palestinians, wounding thousands more, and carrying out hundreds of abductions as part of a systematic campaign of terror and ethnic cleansing.
On Sunday, a Palestinian official reported that illegal settlers had carried out a terrorist attack on the village of al-Tuwani in the Masafer Yatta area of the city of al-Khalil in the occupied West Bank, setting fire to a local mosque and injuring several Palestinians.
The development saw more than two dozen settlers, some of them masked, storm the village at night, scorch the mosque, and spray Hebrew graffiti on its walls. The head of the village council, Mohammed Rabie, said the settlers also set fire to two houses and a dairy factory, injuring two firefighters during the assault.
