Iran resolved to uphold nation’s nuclear rights via diplomacy: FM Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed Iran’s determination to uphold the nation’s lawful nuclear rights through diplomacy.

The top Iranian diplomat made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi late on Saturday.

During the call, Araghchi emphasized the Islamic Republic’s resolve to engage in constructive interaction and to use diplomacy to secure the Iranian nation’s legitimate rights and interests in the field of peaceful nuclear energy, in accordance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and international law.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments related to indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at achieving a just understanding regarding the latter’s nuclear issue.

The phone call came after Iranian and American officials held two rounds of Oman-mediated talks on February 6 and 17, following weeks of escalating tensions.

Washington began its war rhetoric against Iran after recent foreign-linked riots, which immediately failed to take off, and during which US President Donald Trump talked about coming to the aid of the armed mercenaries.

Since then, the United States has kept threatening military action, deploying two carrier groups and dozens of fighter jets, bombers, and refueling aircraft to regional waters near Iran.

The US war posture has prompted Iran to warn that even a single shot fired at the country would be met with a far-reaching and massive response.

On Wednesday, Araghchi and Grossi discussed the outcomes of the second round of Iran-US negotiations over the phone.

The two sides also met on Monday in the Swiss city of Geneva, where they exchanged views on certain technical issues related to Tehran’s cooperation with the IAEA.

During that meeting, the two officials discussed safeguards cooperation and the implementation of the Iranian Parliament’s law regarding the nuclear program.

Iran’s primary demand remains the effective and verifiable lifting of economic sanctions, with officials stating that any deal without tangible economic benefits is meaningless.

The negotiations are taking place against a backdrop of US military escalation.
