Iran’s southern Hormozgan Province has announced three days of public mourning over a deadly blast at the port of Shahid Rajaee.
Hormozgan Governor Mohammad Ashouri Taziani made the announcement on Sunday after 28 people were killed and over 1,000 others wounded at the immense explosion that rocked the container port, which is located in Bandar Abbas and handles 80 million tons of goods a year.
Head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Pirhossein Koolivand said that 190 of the injured are still getting treatment.
He added that 90 percent of the fire has been contained so far and that efforts are underway to bring the fire fully under control in the next one or two hours.
Meanwhile, head of the Hormozgan Province Judiciary, Mojtaba Ghahramani said that 10 out of the victims of the incidents have been identified.
Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni said rescue workers from the capital Tehran and Hormozgan’s neighboring provinces, have arrived at the scene.
The areas ablaze have been isolated to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas, he noted.
Speaking on Sunday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said a parliamentary delegation will be sent to Hormozgan to provide a detailed report about the incident.
An investigation is underway to establish the cause of the explosion and prevent any recurrence.
