As controversy surrounding Signalgate continues to follow US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, members of the Democratic Party have called for his resignation.
After it was revealed on Monday that Hegseth had shared sensitive military intelligence with several individuals, including family and friends, in a second Signal chat group, Democrats called for his immediate resignation.
In addition to the information related to his confirmation hearing, members of the second chat group, Hegseth chief among them, had shared the classified details of the US aggression against Yemen, including the logistics of the attack and its time.
The Democratic representative Angie Craig has said Hegseth should be fired for “gross negligence” and putting US service members at risk.
“He never should’ve been hired in the first place, but his gross negligence in putting our service members at risk is more than enough to be fired for,” she said.
Another Democratic representative, Debbie Wasserman Schulz has also called for his resignation and warned that he is a threat to the US national security.
“Pete Hegseth’s incompetence is a threat to our national security. He needs to resign immediately,” she said.
The Democratic representative and the New Democrat Coalition Chair, Brad Schneider, has demanded the Secretary of Defense’s resignation.
“These new revelations should come as no surprise given the growing body of evidence that clearly demonstrates Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s incompetence and the threat he poses to our national security and the safety of our armed forces,” he said.
The “United States Government group chat leak,” also known as “Signalgate,” is a major political scandal in the US that has plagued Trump’s administration since late March.
From March 11 to 15, 2025, a group of US national security leaders had a conversation about the imminent military aggression against Yemen on a group chat using the Signal messaging service.
On March 15, Hegseth used the chat to share classified details of the impending airstrikes, including types of aircraft and missiles, as well as launch and attack times.
The revelation that Hegseth has been revealing classified information on a second chat group, which did not include any national security leaders, but his family and friends, has given the Democrats the justification they need to call for his immediate resignation.
