A spokesman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says continued Israeli occupation of the strategic Golan Heights destabilizes the security situation in Syria.

Thameen al-Kheetan said Israel violates the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria by occupying areas beyond the so-called buffer zone, and it intends to “double the population of settlers in the Occupied Golan Heights.”

He noted that Israeli occupation and schemes “undermine Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and can potentially further destabilize an already fragile security situation,” the spokesman said.

Militant factions, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, toppled Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024.

Since then, the Israeli military has been launching airstrikes against military installations, facilities, and arsenals belonging to Syria’s now-defunct army.

Israel has been widely and vehemently condemned over the termination of the 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria, and exploiting the chaos in the Arab nation in the wake of Assad’s downfall to make a land grab.

The buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights was created by the United Nations after the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.  A UN force of about 1,100 troops has patrolled the area since then.

UAE strongly condemns Israeli attacks on Syria

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has strongly condemned Israeli attacks on the Syrian territory, reaffirming its commitment to the Arab nation's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Abu Dhabi denounces the attacks as a violation of international law, particularly the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria.

The ministry emphasized that such actions flout established legal frameworks and aggravate regional instability.

The UAE reiterated its categorical rejection of any act that escalates tensions and undermines efforts to secure peace in the region.
