Freed Iranian national to return home after Netherlands rejects US extradition request

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi

Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs says an Iranian national will return home "within hours" after being released from detention in the Netherlands.

Kazem Gharibabadi made the announcement in a post on his X account on Saturday, referring to the release of Mahdi Kiasati, who has been jailed in the Netherlands at the request of the US on charges of violating sanctions.

He added that Kiasati will return to Iran with the follow-ups of the Foreign Ministry, the Judiciary, and the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

Gharibabadi noted that the U.S. government had requested the extradition of the Iranian citizen, but the Netherlands rejected the request.
