Iran orders ban on local producer of fake Nokia phones
Iran’s industry ministry (MIMT) has announced that a company producing and marketing featurephones under the brand name of Nokia is not authorized to operate in the country.
Reports published in the Iranian media on Monday showed that MIMT’s Trade Promotion Organization had issued a letter to related authorities asking them to prevent the operation of a company based near the capital Tehran which has been manufacturing Nokia phones in recent months.
The letter said Nokia’s trademark is registered in Iran and is protected by the country’s law, adding that the company producing the phones has no legal representation from the Finland-based Nokia to manufacture and market its products in Iran.
The order came more than three months after the MIMT said it will adopt necessary measures to deal with the local producer of Nokia phones if it becomes clear that the company is not an authorized representative of Nokia.
Finland’s embassy in Tehran had also filed a complaint in an Iranian court demanding authorities to investigate trademark infringement.
The company producing Nokia featurephones in Iran, identified as Atilla Hamrah Ayahan, said in a statement in June that it had signed a contract with Finish company HMD Global Oy, which is the authorized licensee for Nokia’s phones and tablets, via companies from China and the United Arab Emirates.
The Iranian company has been operating in an industrial zone in the city of Zarandieh in the central Markazi province.
