Saudi authorities release Iranian cleric, media activist detained during Hajj
Saudi security authorities have released an Iranian cleric and media activist following his detention in the kingdom while he was performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
Iran's official IRNA news agency said the Iranian citizen, identified as Seyyed Kazem Rouhbakhsh, was arrested 20 days ago in the holy city of Medina as he was doing his pilgrimage.
The report, however, did not provide any reason for Rouhbakhsh’s arrest by Saudi officials.
“I would like to extend my profound gratitude to officials at [Iran’s] Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, who were vigorously following up on my case from the first day of my detention. They would meet me in person and would provide me with fruits and clothes. My thanks to all of you for your help,” Rouhbakhsh said at Tehran’s International Imam Khomeini Airport on Monday upon return from Saudi Arabia.
He went on to call upon the Iranian Foreign ministry as well as Iran’s ambassador to Riyadh to devote greater efforts aimed at better protection of Iranian Hajj pilgrims’ dignity in Saudi Arabia.
