Israel launches simultaneous ground assaults on Rafah, Shujayea

Israeli forces have left a trail of death and destruction after they once again pushed deeper into the ruins of various parts of the Gaza Strip and continued to pound the blockaded territory with air and artillery strikes.

Residents and witnesses said Israeli forces advanced further on Sunday into the Shujayea neighborhood of northern Gaza City and also pushed deeper into several districts in the east, west and center of the Rafah city.

Israeli tanks, which moved back into Shujayea four days ago, fired shells toward several houses and civilian infrastructure.

Many families are still trapped in Shujayea as Israel’s military keeps hammering the area with air strikes and artillery attacks.

A series of videos circulating on social media show widespread destruction in the Shujayea neighborhood. The videos, shared by residents show a street lined with bombed-out buildings and rubble, extending into a haze of smoke.

The massive destruction comes as Israel continues its intense attacks on the area for a fourth day using air and artillery strikes along with ground forces.

While some Palestinians have made their way out of Shujayea, others have been unable to leave because Israeli quadcopters and drones are shooting at people leaving their houses.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) says 65,000 Palestinians have been able to evacuate, but there are still many trapped.

In one of the latest strikes, at least six Palestinians were killed and many others wounded after Israeli warplanes targeted a house in a residential area of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Some reports said at least 15 people were killed in the north after their homes were directly hit by Israeli artillery shells.

In the central Gaza City neighborhood of al-Daraj, one person was killed and another injured in a regime airstrike.

In the al-Mawasi district – declared a “safe zone” by Israel’s military – Israeli forces have been setting fire to makeshift tent camps where displaced Palestinians have been sheltering.

The armed wing of the Hamas resistance movement and the allied Islamic Jihad reported fierce fighting in both Shujayea and Rafah, saying their fighters had fired anti-tank rockets and mortar bombs against Israeli forces invading there.

A 9-year-old Palestinian died as a result of malnutrition and dehydration.

Meanwhile, David Wightwick, the head of a UK-based medical charity, and CEO of UK-Med, working in Gaza says the health situation has reached a “catastrophic stage” because of the impossibility of acquiring supplies to treat the hundreds of patients flowing into field clinics.

Medical supplies have become scarce ever since Israeli forces captured the Rafah border crossing with Egypt last month and began restricting the transport of desperately needed aid.

Relentless Israeli strikes and shelling keep killing more Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli aggression on Gaza began early last October. Since then, more than 37,800 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 87,000 injured.
