Iran to act decisively in safeguarding own security, national interests: FM spox

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has underscored the country’s constructive role in establishing lasting security across the West Asia region, and asserted that the Islamic Republic will act decisively to defend its security and national interests.

Nasser Kan'ani made the remarks on Sunday in response to a recent statement by the Group of Seven (G7) countries that warned Iran against what they claimed to be “nuclear escalation” by advancing its peaceful nuclear program and keeping up uranium enrichment.

The statement referred in part to the anti-Iran resolution by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which called on Tehran to step up cooperation with the watchdog.

G7 leaders also accused Iran of assisting Russia in the Ukraine war and threatened to enforce new measures if Tehran were to "transfer" ballistic missiles to Moscow.

Kan'ani reaffirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and denounced some of the provisions of the G7 statement, saying the Board of Governors’ resolution bespoke the 35-member body’s political approach and the misuse of international mechanisms by some governments against independent countries.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran continues its constructive interaction and technical cooperation with the IAEA within the framework of its mandated rights and duties and advances its peaceful nuclear plans and projects in accordance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the comprehensive safeguards agreement, regardless of political pressure and propaganda,” the spokesman said.

Kan'ani censured unlawful measures by the US and the three European countries, namely the UK, France and Germany, as the root cause of contentious issues regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

Pointing to Iran’s constructive and stabilizing role in establishing lasting security in the region, Kan'ani said, “The Islamic Republic will act decisively in safeguarding and defending its security and national interests in the face of any uncalculated measure.”

‘False and unproven allegations’

As to the Ukraine war, the spokesman stressed that any attempt to relate the conflict with Iran-Russia bilateral cooperation is an "act solely with biased, political purposes."

“Some countries, under political motivations and through leveling false and unproven allegations, are trying to press ahead with their ineffective and failed policy to impose and maintain sanctions against the Iranian nation," he said.

"We advise the Group of Seven to learn from past experiences and stay away from destructive policies.”

Both Iran and Russia have repeatedly denied claims that Tehran has provided Moscow with weapons to be used in the war in Ukraine.

The anti-Iran claims first emerged in July 2022, when US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan alleged that Washington had received “information” indicating that the Islamic Republic was preparing to provide Russia with “up to several hundred drones, including weapons-capable UAVs on an expedited timeline” for use in the war.
