Joe Biden’s son found guilty on all 3 felonies in federal gun trial
Hunter Biden, son of the US president, has been convicted on all three felonies tied to possession of a gun while using narcotics, making the trial the first of its kind involving the offspring of a sitting president.
A 12-member jury in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday found 54-year-old Hunter, the eldest living son of US President Joe Biden, guilty on all three felony counts he faced relating to purchasing a handgun in 2018 while being a user of crack cocaine.
Following a week-long trial, the jury argued that Hunter, who had pleaded not guilty, lied on a mandatory gun-purchase form by claiming he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.
Two of the counts carry maximum prison sentences of 10 years each, while the third has a maximum of five years, though first-time offenders do not get anywhere near the maximum.
Hunter could be sentenced to more than a year in prison, but the judge could sentence him to more or less time. However, no sentencing date is set yet.
Each count also carries a maximum fine of $250,000.
“Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time,” Hunter said in a written statement following the verdict, adding that he was disappointed by the outcome.
Earlier this month, his father announced that he would not pardon him.
Joe Biden has a very bumpy road ahead to re-election in November against his arch-foe former president Donald Trump, who was quite recently convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal.
