Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit has urged a swift end to the current humanitarian catastrophe in the besieged Gaza Strip.
In press remarks on Tuesday, Aboul Gheit also called for the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the coastal sliver, the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, and the initiation of a reconstruction process in Gaza.
“It is necessary to end the humanitarian catastrophe committed by the Israeli aggression, the complete withdrawal of the occupation forces from the Gaza Strip, the return of the displaced to their areas, and the launch of a reconstruction process... all within the framework of a comprehensive plan to implement the two-state solution based on the relevant Security Council resolutions in accordance with a specific timetable and binding guarantees,” the Arab League chief stated.
Aboul Gheit also emphasized the need for a serious and strong response from the Tel Aviv regime to the ceasefire proposal put forward by American President Joe Biden.
The US leader on Friday laid out a three-phase ceasefire proposal that includes a three-phase plan, an exchange of Israeli captives for Palestinian abductees, the evacuation of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the rebuilding of the devastated coastal territory.
The proposal rules out the idea of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas remaining in power, something that the group has repeatedly rejected.
Meanwhile, Hamas said the occupying entity is not serious about reaching a ceasefire deal with the movement in Gaza, slamming the regime for maneuvering under the cover of the US.
Hamas also said the US pressure against the movement is misguided and that Israel is the one that is blocking a truce deal.
Israel’s bloody war machine has killed over 36,500 Palestinians since October 2023. The vast majority of the fatalities are women and children.
The savage campaign was launched after Hamas carried out its historic Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities.
Israel has additionally enforced a comprehensive blockade on the coastal sliver, severing the supply of fuel, electricity, sustenance and water to the population of over two million Palestinians residing there.
