Russia’s Defense Ministry says nearly 1,400 Ukrainian troopers were killed in battles with Russian soldiers in Ukraine's two eastern breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in 24 hours.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said Ukraine’s losses in battles with the southern grouping of the Russian armed forces in the past day “amounted to up to 540 military personnel, two tanks, including a German-made Leopard-2A1, two armored fighting vehicles, [and] 11 vehicles [among other military losses]."

The statement noted that Russia's central grouping of forces took better tactical positions in Donetsk, adding that up to 395 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in battles there.

According to the ministry, up to 135 Ukrainian soldiers were also killed in battles with Russia's eastern grouping of forces which have improved their tactical position.

Meanwhile, up to 250 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in battles with Russia’s northern grouping in the past day, the ministry said. The Ukrainians also lost two tanks, two armored vehicles, and 17 cars in the battles.

The ministry added that the northern grouping also repelled five counterattacks by Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

In the Luhansk People's Republic, the western grouping repelled 13 Ukrainian counterattacks, leaving up to 80 Ukrainian soldiers dead, the ministry said.

This comes as former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter has predicted that Ukraine will loss up to 2,000 soldiers a day as Russia expands its operation into Kharkiv region.

Russian troops launched the operation against the Kharkiv region on Friday, capturing several villages.

Moscow launched the military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Western countries have responded to the Russian military operation by backing Ukraine with cash and heavy weaponry while imposing unprecedented sanctions on Russian officials and entities.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that such a flow of weapons to Kiev will only prolong the conflict.
