More displaced Palestinians flee Rafah as Israel presses with ground invasion

Men ride in the back of a truck loaded with furniture and other items as they flee bound for Khan Yunis, in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on May 11, 2024.

More displaced Palestinians were seen leaving Rafah on Sunday as Israel presses ahead with its plans for a ground attack on the southern city.

Israel called on Saturday for Palestinians in more areas of Rafah to evacuate and head to what it calls an expanded humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi.

People loaded donkey carts and trucks with their belongings, leaving behind empty streets covered in rubble of collapsed buildings.

The Israeli military also called on residents and displaced people in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza to clear out, saying it was returning to operate there after it noticed Hamas trying to re-establish its control of the area.
