Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations urges that the Israeli regime get its comeuppance for afflicting the entire region with deadly predicaments.
“Israel shall be punished for all its international wrongdoings, which has put the whole region on fire,” Amir Saeid Iravani told a UN General Assembly meeting on Palestine on Monday.
The envoy singled out the regime’s ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, which has killed upwards of 33,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, since its onset on October 7 last year.
“This assault is without precedent in modern history in the scale and pace of killing of children, of UN humanitarian and medical teams, of journalists…,” he said.
The remarks came a day after the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said the Israeli war had set a new record in terms of killing minors, paramedics, and journalists.
“This war broke all the superlatives with the highest number of children killed, aid workers, journalists, and medical teams + unprecedented attacks & destruction of hospitals & UN buildings in blatant disregard of International Humanitarian Law,” he wrote in a post on his X account.
Iravani went on to say, “We all know the horrors need to end and the only way to end them is an effective ceasefire.”
He also noted the Israeli regime’s refusal to abide by a General Assembly resolution that called on Tel Aviv to cease the aggression last December, and its defiance of even a UN Security Council resolution that was passed last month, making the same demand on the regime.
“Despite repeated calls, Israel has failed to commit to its obligations. Israel blatantly has defied these resolutions and continues in its atrocious and genocidal acts against the defenseless people of Gaza,” Iravani said.
The ambassador also pointed to the regime’s attack of April 1 on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, which led to the martyrdom of seven Iranians, including a senior commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
“The Israeli regime committed a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic which represents a profound disgrace to the shared principle of the international community, namely the inviolability of representatives and diplomatic and consular premises,” he said.
Iravani, meanwhile, noted that neither the Israeli regime’s genocidal practices in Gaza, nor its attack on the Iranian diplomatic mission would have been possible without “explicit consent, and comprehensive political, financial, and military support, as well as partnership, from the United States” -- the regime’s biggest ally.
“By playing a destructive role, the United States has exhausted the entire arsenal of political and diplomatic devices to prevent establishment of peace, and deliberately undermined multilateral efforts under the auspices of the UN for the sake of their selfish geopolitical interests in the Middle East region,” the ambassador concluded.
