Iranian researcher wins 2023 Kuwait Prize for control of non-communicable diseases

Davood Khalili an epidemiologist and professor at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences win the Kuwait Prize.

An Iranian researcher has won the State of Kuwait Prize 2023 for making an outstanding contribution to the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

Doctor Davood Khalili, was announced as the 2023 recipient of the State of Kuwait Prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, according to a Sunday report by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.

It is one of several Foundation awards, administered by the World Health Organization, to acknowledge the work of well-known scientists, researchers, or dedicated people who have made an outstanding contribution to the prevention, control, or research about cancer, cardiovascular disease, and/or diabetes, WHO says.

Candidates are more likely to win the prize in case they contribute to the successful formulation and implementation of national policy and strategy for one or more of the non-communicable diseases mentioned above, according to the WHO.

Khalili is an epidemiologist and professor at the Center for Research on the Prevention of Metabolic Diseases at the Institute of Glandular Sciences at Shahid Bahshti University of Medical Sciences.

He is also a cardiovascular health researcher in the Global Health and Population Department of Harvard University, working on the field of prediction models of cardiovascular diseases and recognition of high-risk people in Iran and the world.

The prize consists of a bronze medal and a sum of money, which is presented at the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean by the Committee’s Chairman.

In 2007, Dr Fereydoun Azizi, the director of Iran’s Institute for Endocrine Sciences, won the award.

Afshin Ostovar, a professor at Tehran University of Medical Science, is another Iranian recipient of the prestigious award in 2022.
