The national Iranian freestyle wrestling team has clinched four medals at the 2023 World Wrestling Championships in Serbia, securing the overall vice-champion title of the tournament.
The US wrestling squad collected 148 points and was named the top-ranked outfit of the high-status international sporting event at the multi-purpose indoor Štark Arena in the Serbian capital city of Belgrade.
Iranian freestyle wrestlers claimed the second place with 110 points, while Georgians got 80 points to land in the third slot.
On Monday evening, Mohammad Ashghar Nokhodilarimi overwhelmed Orkhan Abasov from Azerbaijan 10-0 in the third-place bout of the 79-kilogram weight class and earned a bronze medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Earlier in the competitions, Amir Hossein Abbas Zare’ routed Georgian contestant Geno Petriashvili 11-0, and won the gold medal in the 125-kilogram division.
Hassan Aliazam Yazdanicharati could not triumph over his American opponent David Morris Taylor in the final contest of the 86-kilogram weight category and lost to him 3-9 to scoop the silver medal.
Moreover, Amir-Mohammad Babak Yazdanicherati lost to American wrestler Zain Allen Retherford 5-8 in the 70-kilogram final contest and got the silver.
The 2023 World Wrestling Championships is held from September 16 to 24 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Wrestlers will get a chance to win 90 quotas for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
