Damascus condemns a visit by the top US general to an American base in northeast Syria as illegal and a flagrant violation of the countrys sovereignty. Washington has stationed forces and equipment there, without Syrias consent. Damascus says the illegal deployment is aimed at plundering Syrias natural resources. The US Congress has also voted down a resolution which called for the withdrawal of US troops from the country.
