Broadband mobile internet penetration rate in Iran at 121%: Regulator

Figures by Iran’s telecoms regulator show number of high-speed mobile internet users rose by over 11% in 2022.

Figures by Iran’s Communication Regulatory Authority (CRA) show that mobile internet penetration rate in the country rose by 14% to 121% in 2022.

CRA figures covered in a Thursday report by the official IRNA news agency showed that number of high-speed mobile internet subscribers in the Iran had reached a total of 102.3 million in the year to December 21, up more than 11% from the same period in 2021.

The figures showed the number of mobile users in Iran also rose by more than five million to 145.5 million at the end of 2022, bringing the mobile penetration rate in the country to over 173%.

However, the CRA said there was a slight increase of only 200,000 in the number of Iran’s fixed broadband subscriptions last year.

The figures come amid plans by the Iranian government to further boost access to mobile and fixed internet services.

Telecoms minister Issa Zarepour has said that 400 new fifth-generation (5G) mobile internet sites will be rolled out in the country this February.

He also said last month that new frequencies had been assigned to mobile operators in Iran to help them boost services under the current 4G systems.

The Iranian government also plans to connect over 20 million homes and businesses to the high-speed fixed fiber network by mid-2025.
