US military mulls sending Stryker armored vehicles to Ukraine
US military officials have contemplated delivering Stryker armored vehicles to Ukraine as a part of a new Pentagon shipment scheduled for next week.
An unnamed Pentagon official interviewed by Politico reported on Monday that American officials had not yet announced their final decision on the matter and the new armored infantry vehicles could be included in one or another of the next weapons batches sent to Ukraine.
The reported decision for sending Stryker vehicle comes after the West announced last week that it had decided to supply armored military vehicles in a new weapons shipment to Ukraine for its war with Russia, which included 50 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.
Washington could also officially announce the next package, with or without the Stryker armored vehicles late next week, the Pentagon official told Politico.
“Ukrainians need armored personnel carriers and short of other countries providing it, is what we have in inventory,” the Pentagon official was quoted as saying. “Not as good as a Bradley for a tank fight, but good to protect infantry and get up close to a fight.”
The Stryker, made in USA by General Dynamics Land Systems, is an eight-wheeled crossover armored personnel carrier with off-road body-type which usually carries a .50 caliber machine gun.
Russia has repeatedly warned the West against flooding Ukraine with weapons.
The Kremlin insists that sending more weapons to Ukraine will only prolong the war while prompting the Kiev forces to kill civilians in the pro-Moscow regions.
