A suspect wielding a machete attacked New York Police Department (NYPD) police officers on Friday near Times Square in New York during the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration, according to authorities.

Three NYPD officers were injured in the incident which happened after 10 p.m. ET at West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue on Saturday, just outside of the high-security zone where revelers were celebrating New Year, New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a press conference on Sunday morning.

Sewell said that a 19-year-old man approached an officer and attempted to strike him over the head with the machete. The man then attacked two other officers with the machete on the head with the blade before being shot by police, Sewell added.

She said one of the officers fired their weapon and struck the man in the shoulder. The suspect was apprehended by police.

Sewell said that the officers were hospitalized, one with a fractured skull and another with a bad cut.

She said the suspect is also being treated for his injuries at the hospital.

“This is another reminder of what our officers face,” she added.

Mayor Eric Adams told the news conference that he had spoken to one of the wounded officers.

Mike Driscoll, the FBI assistant director in charge, said his agency is working closely with the NYPD to determine the nature of the attack, and the investigation is ongoing.
