Iran reports major increase in water supply to dams after December rains
Water supply to dams in Iran rose significantly in the water year starting in September compared to the same period last year mainly due to good precipitation in the country in early December, according to a new report published in the local media.
The Sunday report by the semi-official Tansim news agency said that water supply to dams across Iran reached 3.043 billion cubic meters (bcm) in the period between September 22 and December 10.
It said the figure was an increase of 14% compared to the same period last year.
That comes as water supply to Iranian dams had risen by only 1% year on year from the start of the water year to November 26 to reach a total of 2.7 bcm, said the report.
The figures confirmed reports suggesting that early December rains in Iran had boosted water storage in the country’s reservoirs.
The report cited data by Iranian Energy Ministry’s Water Resources Management Company. It said that some 4.055 bcm of water had been released from Iranian dams from September 22 to December 10, down 4% from the same period in 2021.
The data showed that Iranian dams had been filled to an average of around 37% of their capacity on December 10.
The figures come weeks after Iran issued warnings about dropping water levels in dams that could lead to shortage in drinking water supplies in large cities like the capital Tehran.
