Former US president Donald Trump is expected to officially launch his third presidential campaign, amid mounting criticism from Republicans that he cost them control of the Senate.

Trump has summoned the press to his Florida mansion for a "very big announcement" on Tuesday.

"President Trump is going to announce on Tuesday that he's running for president," said one of his advisors, Jason Miller.

The 76-year-old billionaire has on many occasions hinted he will seek the White House again in 2024.

This comes as many Republicans, wary of being associated with Trump, are trying to steer the party away from the former president, warning that Trump’s plans for another White House bid could hurt their chances of winning the Senate runoff in Georgia next month.

The Republican Party, which had been expected to make significant gains in this year’s midterm elections, lost its grip on the Senate majority. Democrats celebrated their victory in the upper chamber on Sunday as the fate of the House of Representatives still remained uncertain.

“It’s basically the third election in a row that Donald Trump has cost us the race,” said Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, adding that it would be a mistake to nominate Trump again as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate.

Trump, however, pointed the finger of blame toward Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, saying that the results were a "scam.”

"It's Mitch McConnell's fault," he said in a post on his Truth Social platform. "He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him," Trump  said.

Trump's new White House bid will likely be hampered by the multiple investigations into his conduct during and after the presidency.

Republicans expect Attorney General Merrick Garland to peruse an indictment of Trump as part of two separate investigations into his conduct.

One is related to the documents taken from the White House and found at Mar-a-Lago, while the other concerns the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

On January 6, Trump gave a provocative speech to his supporters, refusing to concede his election loss to Joe Biden, and the crowd proceeded to march on Capitol Hill, breaching the perimeter, attacking security guards, and sending lawmakers running for their safety.

President Joe Biden, 80, said he will make a final decision, on whether he will stand for reelection, next year.
