Iran envoy: Dissemination of fake, incorrect information, major threat to promoting human rights

Ali Bahraini, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva

Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva has criticized certain countries for the dissemination of fake news and disinformation about what is going on in the country, describing it as a major threat to the promotion of human rights.

Ali Bahraini made the remarks in a Monday speech in response to a joint statement by a number of UN members at the world body’s Human Rights Council about the riots that followed the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman, named Mahsa Amini. She collapsed at a police station in the capital, Tehran, and died at hospital despite intensive medical care and resuscitation efforts.

During the violent protests, security officers were attacked and public property as well as police vehicles and ambulances were vandalized.

“From the very first moment of Ms. Mahsa Amini's death, Iran's high-ranking officials, including the Leader [of the Islamic Revolution] and the president, ordered an investigation into the details of this tragic incident with ‘urgency and accuracy’,” Bahraini said.

Stressing that the final results of the ongoing investigations will soon be released with “full transparency,” the Iranian diplomat said, “We request that others refrain from issuing hasty announcements or statements.”

“The dual and selective approach [to human rights issues] and the dissemination of false, fake and misleading information is one of the serious threats to the promotion of human rights,” Bahraini said, adding, “Incitement to violence, hate-mongering, [inciting] public disorder and terrorism are not acceptable in any society.”

Affirming that the Islamic Republic appreciates and welcomes genuine efforts for upholding the rights of women and girls, Bahraini said, “Iran is one of the most successful and best examples of promoting women's rights, and that various indicators show the remarkable progress of Iranian women in the fields of education, health, industry, economy and politics.”

The diplomat concluded that the Islamic Republic is seriously committed to its international obligations in the field of human rights and actively cooperates with the Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and human rights mechanisms to promote the human rights of its people, especially women and girls.
