Former US President Donald Trump slammed Republican Senate Minority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell, saying the senator has a “death wish” for supporting bills that congressional Democrats have sponsored.
Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday that any reason McConnell has for supporting the Democratic bills are “unacceptable.”
McConnell has supported a continuing resolution to fund the government through the middle of December and avoid a government shutdown.
Trump, who accused McConnell of being a “pawn for the Democrats,” slammed him following news of the senator’s support for the Electoral Count Act, which senators have advanced in response to the Jan. 6, 2021 violent protest march at the Capitol.
“Is McConnell approving all of these Trillions of Dollars worth of Democrat sponsored Bills, without even the slightest bit of negotiation, because he hates Donald J. Trump, and he knows I am strongly opposed to them, or is he doing it because he believes in the Fake and Highly Destructive Green New Deal, and is willing to take the Country down with him?” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“In any event, either reason is unacceptable,” he continued. “He has a DEATH WISH. Must immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!”
The bill would raise the number of members of Congress required to object to a state’s Electoral College votes in order for the body to reanalyze the results when it counts the ballots. Only one senator and one representative need to object under the Electoral Count Act of 1887, but the new legislation would raise the threshold to one-fifth of both chambers.
McConnell announced his support for the legislation that was negotiated by a bipartisan group of lawmakers, but Trump allies like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) have said that the legislation has been motivated by anti-Trump sentiment.
Trump has previously denounced McConnell for failing to prevent what he has called the theft of the 2020 election.
Trump has feuded with McConnell since the Senate leader denounced the former president in Congress for his alleged role in January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Trump has frequently attacked McConnell for acknowledging Biden as the legitimate winner of the disputed 2020 election.
McConnell was called an “Old Crow” by Trump. Trump said former Vice President Mike Pence should not have “an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible,” when there were “obvious signs of voter fraud or irregularities.”
Trump and his allies had raised concerns that widespread fraud marred the election and that it was rigged by the Washington establishment in favor of Biden, who was certified as the winner in Congress on January 6, 2021.
Trump has been casting doubt on the outcome of his loss by insisting it was the result of fraud. He has said that the 2020 presidential election was “the greatest Election Hoax in history.”
McConnell distanced himself from Trump since the former president was accused by the Washington establishment and media of inciting his supporters to invade the Capitol in the wake of his loss in the disputed 2020 presidential election.
McConnell had said that Trump is "morally responsible" for provoking the January 6 storming of the Capitol to overturn the election results.
