Kamala Harris in Seoul amid US-South Korea drills, North Korea’s test-fire

US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Demilitarized Zone that divides North and South Korea on Thursday.

She tried to reassure South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol of Washington’s support. The Korean leader also expressed his will to for a closer alliance with the US.

Harris’s visit to South Korea follows a missile test by North Korea Wednesday as well as the largest US– South Korea maritime military exercises in 5 years. The South’s Yoon seeks a more regular deployment of US nuclear capable weapons in his country.

The separation between North Korea and South Korea is again expressed through the visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris. And that separation is no better shown here, at Imjingak, a tourist site, just south of the heavily fortified DMZ.

Earlier this week, North Korea’s ambassador to the UN placed the blame for the escalation of tensions in the Korean peninsula on the US.

With more joint military exercises to follow, the new South Korean president seems to be less keen for dialogue with the northern neighbor. There seems to be no end to tensions in sight as both sides insist on increasing their military capabilities.
