Ukraine victim of US policy of creating tension in world: Hezbollah official

Ali Damoush, deputy chairman of Hezbollah’s Executive Council

A high-ranking official with Lebanon's resistance movement Hezbollah has blamed the United States for the current crisis in Ukraine, describing Kiev as a victim of Washington’s policy of spreading tensions in the world.

Ali Damoush, deputy chairman of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, made the remarks on Friday, saying the US is the one responsible for the crisis in Ukraine because it was Washington that planned and provoked the conflict.

“Ukraine has fallen victim to the United States' policy of escalating tensions in the world. The lesson one can learn from the recent developments in Ukraine is that the United States’ support for its allies is just an illusion."

The truth is that the Ukrainian president and the former president of Afghanistan trusted the US and relied on its support, but both of them have admitted that the US abandoned them, he added.

The Hezbollah official further rejected war, killing, occupation and destruction anywhere in the world, while accusing the West of “double standards” in dealing with global crises, which is condemning Ukraine’s war but has turned a blind eye to the US and Saudi crimes in Yemen.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" aimed at “demilitarization” of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics in eastern Ukraine, collectively known as the Donbass.

The regions broke away from Ukraine in 2014 after refusing to recognize a Western-backed Ukrainian government that had overthrown a democratically-elected Russia-friendly administration.

Announcing the operation, Putin said the mission was aimed at “defending people who for eight years are suffering persecution and genocide by the Kiev regime.”

Russian forces have been advancing towards Kiev and seizing control of a number of towns and cities along the way. Authorities in Moscow have fiercely denied claims made by Ukrainian and Western officials of civilian areas being targeted by the Russian military.

The conflict has provoked a unanimous response from the US and allies, imposing a long list of sanctions on Moscow while Western politicians and media outlets have voiced solidarity with Ukraine.

However, the US and the allies of Ukraine have failed to support Kiev against Russia and have refused to set up a “no-fly zone” over the country following a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
