New York mayor calls for gun reforms after deadly incident

The Mayor of New York City has called on US politicians to immediately approve gun bans after a shooting incident in Harlem left one police officer dead and a second in critical condition.

"We need Washington to join us and act now to stop the flow of guns in New York City and cities like New York." Eric Adams, who is a former policeman and a Democrat, said on Friday following the incident.

"We don't make guns here. How are we removing thousands of guns off the street, and they still find their way into New York City,? Adams said in a plea to US politicians.

In related news, New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said, "We have four times this month rushed to the scene of NYPD officers shot by violent criminals in possession of deadly, illegal guns. Five officers were shot, one fighting for his life in four incidents. And now tonight, one is dead."

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, who is from New York-born and raised in Brooklyn, offered his condolences to the NYPD.

NYPD officer dead, another critically wounded, in Harlem shooting

Mayor Eric Adams called the shooting “an attack on the city of New York.”

The slain officer was Jason Rivera, 22, who had joined the NYPD in 2020. The wounded officer was identified as Wilbert Mora, 27, who has been with the force for four years.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as LaShawn McNeil, 47, was also shot by a third officer at the scene. He survived but was in critical condition.
